EV Insurance in 2026: Understanding Battery Coverage and Managing Your Premium
A summary of EV insurance rules under OIC guidelines, including named drivers, age-based battery coverage and how to choose the right policy

Insurance is an annual cost that many EV owners pay close attention to, since EV premiums are often higher than for combustion-engine cars at a similar price. Understanding what drives the premium and the standard policy rules set by the Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) will help you choose coverage that fits your needs and manage your costs better.
Why EV Insurance Premiums Are Higher
PPTV reported in April 2026 that the high-voltage battery accounts for a significant share of a vehicle's price and is mounted beneath the floor, so even a seemingly minor impact can affect it. In addition, high-voltage system repairs require certified technicians and specialized safety equipment, and some models use large single-piece body structures that often need replacing entirely when damaged. These factors drive up claim costs, which is reflected in premium rates.
Key EV Insurance Policy Rules
The OIC, together with the Thai General Insurance Association, has set a standard policy for EVs, in use since 2024, with the following key points
- Age-based battery coverage If the battery needs replacing, it is covered at full value in the first year, decreasing by about 10% per year of battery age down to a minimum of 50%
- Named drivers The policy requires named drivers, and if an unnamed driver is at fault, the policyholder may have to pay a deductible
- Claims-history discounts Drivers with a good claims history and good driving behavior may receive a premium discount at renewal
- Wall charger Chargers not supplied with the car by the manufacturer are generally not included in the main coverage, but additional coverage can be purchased
Practical details, such as the number of named drivers allowed or the deductible amount, may differ between insurers, so read the policy schedule in full before deciding
How to Manage Your Premium Sensibly
- Consider additional coverage that keeps the battery insured at full value, especially as the car gets older
- Name experienced drivers with good records for a chance at a better premium
- Consider a voluntary deductible if you want to lower the base premium
- Check that garages or repair centers in the insurer's network are equipped for EVs
Future Trends
As domestic production of cars and batteries increases, more repair centers become certified and battery designs that allow module-level repairs become more common, experts expect EV claims costs and insurance premiums to fall over the long term.
