What Is Geely's GEA Architecture, and Why Does It Matter to Drivers?
Get to know GEA, Geely's new energy vehicle architecture behind the EX5 and EX2, from the 11-in-1 drive unit to centralized electrical systems and OTA updates

When it comes to EVs, most buyers focus on the obvious numbers, such as battery capacity or driving range. But what really determines a car's long-term quality is the "platform" — the underlying structure it is built on. For Geely, the main platform of this era is GEA (Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture) which underpins both the Geely EX5 and Geely EX2 sold in Thailand.
What is GEA?
First unveiled in April 2024, GEA is a modular architecture designed to support multiple powertrains on the same base, including battery electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), extended-range (EREV) and alternative fuels such as methanol. Geely defines the concept as integrating four elements: hardware, operating system, digital ecosystem and artificial intelligence.
The Geely EX5 (known as the Galaxy E5 in China) was the first model built on GEA, before it was extended to the EX2 and other models later on.
11-in-1 drive unit that is lighter and more compact
One of GEA's highlights is the 11-in-1 electric drive unit, which combines the motor, power electronics and transmission into a single structure. This approach reduces overall weight, cuts the number of connection points that could wear over time and lowers the car's center of gravity. What drivers notice is more stable handling and a cabin that feels roomier than the car's exterior size suggests.
Centralized electrical system and over-the-air updates
GEA works together with the GEEA 3.0 electronic architecture, which is reported to consolidate more than ten traditional control units into just a few central processors, connected by an in-vehicle Ethernet network. This design is what allows the car to receive over-the-air (OTA) software updates , including improvements to the displays, driver assistance and new features, without needing a visit to the service center every time.
The next step: GEA Evo
At the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2025, Geely announced GEA Evo, an evolved version supporting double-wishbone front suspension, dual rear motors, longer wheelbases and rear-wheel steering — showing that the platform is designed to scale across multiple price points and vehicle sizes.
What buyers in Thailand get
- A car designed for electric power from the start, not converted from a petrol car, so the battery and cabin can be packaged efficiently
- Continuity of parts and service, as many models share common components
- Software that keeps improving throughout the vehicle's life
Most of the technical information comes from Geely's own disclosures, so buyers should weigh it alongside real-world driving experience.
The best way to understand how the GEA platform affects driving is to sit in and drive it yourself. Motor Creation can arrange comparative test drives of the Geely EX5 and EX2, with advisors who explain the technology in easy-to-understand terms.
